During his 4 year well checkup, our pediatrician did a vision screen. They are optional, but we are certainly glad we decided to do it. He failed that screen in one eye, so they sent us to an Opthamologist. During that appointment, the screen results were confirmed and we found that Brandon's vision was extremely poor in his Left eye. His Right eye was within normal range, though it was also a little farsighted.
Due to the huge differential between the two eyes, the Dr. warned us that if we don't force his brain to use the weak eye, he will eventually be considered legally blind in that eye. So, our first step is glasses to get that eye seeing in focus. The next step will be to somehow patch the "good" eye so that his brain is forced to use his weak eye thus ensuring that the connections between sight and brain are developed. He will need to wear glasses his entire life due to his farsightedness, but the fact that we caught this early allows us to work on the brain development aspect of his vision. This is something that we may not have caught even once he entered school since he can see just fine, it just turns out he's only using one eye to see. Thank goodness for good pediatricians!
